Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB Review

Introduction

If you keep a close eye on our output here at OC3D you’ll remember a few months ago we reviewed the 2TB Samsung 9100 Pro. Another in the long line of high performance Samsung drives, the 9100 Pro really tests the limits of the PCI Express 5.0 bandwidth.

Naturally we’re big fans of fast hardware here. There is something hugely entertaining about seeing such massive scores pour in from our benchmarks. Additionally Samsung have often found themselves hitting new ‘high scores’, which mean we always approach a new M.2 option from them with glee.

Today sees the addition of the final model in the 9100 Pro range, the 8TB version. Basically the same as the 2TB we’ve previously reviewed, only this time with enough storage capacity to sate even the most demanding user. Whether you edit films for a living, or merely have been unable to resist Steam sales, the Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB promises to tick all the desirability boxes.

As we’ve already discovered how fast this is, our primary interest today is whether the 8TB model brings even further speed when compared to the 2TB one, or if the larger density memory chips have slightly taken the edge off of the ultimate performance. Let’s find out.

Up Close

We’ve often spoken about how M.2 drives don’t make for the most interesting items to show off. After all, only the heatsink is different and most don’t come with one. The Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB has a heatsink model available. We’re testing the naked drive today.
