Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB NVMe Review
Conclusion
Conclusion
Clearly the Samsung 9100 Pro is fast. It’s something we have experienced with every Samsung drive since the dawn of solid state storage. As each new technology appears, Samsung easily manage to saturate the available bandwidth. Despite the huge throughput available on PCI Express 5.0, the 9100 Pro has no issues using every last bit of it.
SSD capacity has always been a curious beast. Or, perhaps, there are quirks only engineers would understand. At the smaller capacities the ultimate speed is less than that of 1TB + drives. However, speed doesn’t increase linearly. Once you hit the heights of a drive with a capacity we have today, a whopping 8TB, everything plateaus. In fact in some tests the ultra-fine edge of extra speed is blunted somewhat on the biggest offerings.
All of which means that we approached the Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB hoping that it at least matched the excellence we saw back in March from the 2TB model. It absolutely does. In fact it’s basically indistinguishable from it’s smaller stablemate. That might not sound like much – “this 9100 Pro is as fast as another 9100 Pro” – but it demonstrates how robust Samsung’s designs are. Pushing a 8TB drive to the same speeds as the 2TB model is akin to discovering a shot-putter who can run like Usain Bolt.
The Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB is all things to all people. With the reliability of Samsung’s build quality, the speed for which they are famed, and large enough to suit most applications. An easy winner of our OC3D Enthusiast Award.
