Disney confirms huge Disney+ Price hike

Disney+ is getting a price hike in the US, with baseline pricing rising 20%

On October 21st, Disney+ will undergo a price increase in the US, with the baseline pricing rising from $9.99 per month to $11.99 per month. That’s a 20% price hike for a basic/standard subscription. For Premium Disney+ users, the monthly price will increase from $15.99 to $18.99. This is an 18.7% price increase. These price increases are much higher than inflation. Price increases have also impacted subscription deals that include Hulu and ESPN.

Currently, these price rises will only impact users in the US. However, similar price increases are expected in the US and Europe in the near future. This US price increase comes after the controversy surrounding the suspension of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! The apparent cancellation of the show led to widespread cancellations of Disney+ subscriptions. Jimmy Kimmel Live returned to ABC last night following the backlash.

This is not the first price hike that Disney+ has experienced. The service launched in 2019 for $6.99 per month in the US. However, it should be noted that this price was artificially low, a tactic that Disney used to gain market share from existing streaming giants. Regardless, Disney+ was available for this price without ads. Now, US users are expected to pay $11.99 per month and watch ads. For an ad-free experience, users will soon need to pay $18.99 per month.
