It’s official – AMD takes X3D to the next level with its Ryzen 7 9850X3D
AMD has made its fastest gaming CPU even faster – Meet the Ryzen 7 9850X3D
It’s official, AMD has unveiled a new flagship gaming CPU at CES 2026. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D is real, and it is launching in Q1 2026. AMD has taken its fastest Zen 5 gaming CPU and made it even faster.
Without increasing TDP, AMD has built a higher-performance version of its popular Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPU. With a boost clock speed of 5.6 GHz, AMD’s new 9850X3D is 400 MHz faster than its predecessor. That’s a boost clock speed increase of almost 7.7%. Not bad for a mid-generation refresh.
No extra cache, just higher clocks
During our CES pre-briefing, AMD confirmed that its new 9850X3D CPU will be up to 5% faster than its 9800X3D CPU in most workloads. That makes AMD’s new X3D gaming flagship an even more appealing upgrade option for gamers.
While 5% is not enough to make most 9800X3D users feel that upgrade itch, the same can be said for most mid-generation refreshes. Regardless, it extends AMD’s performance lead to even greater heights.
Extending their lead over Intel
Across a selection of 35+ games at 1080p high settings, AMD claims its new Ryzen 7 9850X3D gaming CPU is 27% faster than Intel’s Ultra 9 285K on average. Based on AMD’s chart below, AMD’s performance leadership is between 5% and 60%, depending on the game tested.
Even without their new 9850X3D model, AMD claimed performance leadership. With the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, AMD has extended its lead over Intel.
Below, we can see how AMD’s X3D CPUs impact a variety of games. Based on the data below, AMD’s X3D technology has larger benefits for older games and esports titles. That said, even the newest releases benefit from AMD’s X3D upgrade. Note that esports titles seem to benefit most from AMD’s 9800X3D to 9850X3D upgrade, signalling that those games benefit most from higher CPU clock speeds.
No other new X3D CPUs (at least for now)
Based on the slide below, AMD’s Ryzen 7 9850X3D will be available concurrently with their existing 9800X3D model. Aside from the 9850X3D’s higher boost clock speed, both CPUs feature identical specifications. AMD has unveiled no additional Ryzen 9000 series CPUs.
Broadening X3D CPU availability
AMD’s Ryzen X3D gaming CPUs are now more widely available from OEMs and system integrators. These customers will also get access to the 9850X3D, allowing them to build more powerful gaming PCs.
While it doesn’t use new architecture or technologies, the 9850X3D is now AMD’s most powerful gaming CPU. It extends AMD’s performance leadership by a few inches, making Zen 5 a more compelling upgrade for PC enthusiasts. Sadly, AMD has not confirmed the 9850X3D’s pricing, though it will be available this quarter.
