Zen 6 leak unveils compact design despite HUGE core/cache boost

Leak claims HUGE density boost with AMD’s upcoming Zen 6 CPUs

CCD sizing for AMD’s next-generation Zen 6 processors has leaked, revealing a staggering increase in CPU density compared with the company’s older processors. Despite offering 50% more CPU cores and 50% more L3 cache, AMD’s next-gen CPU CCDs are only slightly larger than their Zen 5 counterparts (76 mm² vs 71 mm²). With a 76 mm², AMD’s Zen 6 CCDs are very compact, especially given their core count.

AMD’s Zen 6 CCDs reportedly feature 12 CPU cores and 48MB of L3 cache. This is a major change over AMD’s norms for Ryzen CPUs, which have used 8-core CCDs and have featured 32MB of total L2 cache since Zen 2. However, it is worth noting that AMD’s Zen 2 CCDs were configured as two 4-core CPU core clusters with 16MB of L3 cache each.

Much of AMD’s density gains undoubtedly come from AMD’s move to TSMC 2nm silicon. Today’s Zen 5 Ryzen CPUs from AMD use TSMC’s 4nm silicon. By using smaller transistors, AMD can pack more CPU features into the same silicon area, enabling more powerful processors. That said, it’s unclear how much AMD’s density gains come from TSMC’s 2nm node and how much comes from CPU design changes.

Keeping CPUs small reduces costs, so keeping AMD’s Zen 6 CCDs small yields cost benefits. However, newer lithography nodes are also more expensive, countering this impact. Regardless, AMD needed to keep its Zen 6 CCDs small, as AMD are constrained by the size of its AM5 CPU socket.

AMD Zen 6 expectations

With 12-core CCDs, AMD’s next-generation Ryzen CPUs are expected to feature models with up to 24 total CPU cores (with dual-CCD designs). Thanks to AMD’s increased CCD cache sizes, each CPU core will have direct access to 48MB of L3 cache. This is a 50% increase over Zen 5. This should have a significant impact on cache-sensitive workloads and gaming performance. After all, enlarged L3 caches are the entire point of AMD’s X3D CPU lineup.

With Zen 6, we expect gains in single-threaded performance over Zen 5. Thanks to AMD’s 12-core CCDs, we also expect higher levels of multi-threaded performance from AMD’s Zen 6 processors. Having faster cores and more of them should make AMD’s Zen 6 CPUs much faster than their predecessors. Furthermore, with AMD’s next-generation Zen 6 X3D CPUs, cache sizes could reach a whole new level. If AMD triples its L3 cache sizes with Zen 6 X3D, CPU CCDs could be created with 144 MB of L3 cache. This could further increase the gaming performance of AMD’s X3D CPUs.
