DLSS 5 Neural Rendering spotted in new Nvidia drivers – Is this DLSS 5?

Nvidia “DLSS NR” settings spotted within Nvidia’s newest GPU drivers – The beginnings of DLSS 5?

Nvidia’s new GeForce 610.47 driver is the start of a new driver branch. While its headline features are game-ready support for 007 First Light and Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, PC enthusiasts have spotted other changes lurking below the surface. Using Nvidia Inspector (thanks Dicehunter), settings for “DLSS NR” (DLSS Neural Rendering) have been spotted, which likely relate to DLSS 5.

These new settings are currently non-functional. They do nothing within today’s games, even if they are enabled. While the settings are there, Nvidia has not officially released DLSS 5 or the files/software needed to make it work.

DLSS 5 uses Neural Rendering to improve the lighting and material quality of games. This can result in a tremendous graphical uplift in games and give them an entirely different look. This has made DLSS 5 a controversial feature, as it can disregard artistic intent and can completely change a game’s aesthetic. That said, the visual impact of this tech on some games will be positive, and Nvidia claims that game developers will have control over how DLSS 5 is used. This should, in theory, allow their artistic intent to be preserved.

(DLSS NR – Neural Rendering?)

If these new references to “DLSS NR” are anything to go by, it is likely that DLSS 5 will launch as part of Nvidia’s new 600-series driver branch. Nvidia originally planned for DLSS 5 to launch “this fall”. However, it remains to be seen if this will happen. After all, Nvidia may have been forced to rework or adjust DLSS 5. The unveiling of DLSS 5 was followed by a massive backlash. It would be wrong for Nvidia to ignore those concerns.
