Xbox could launch “Positron” disc-to-digital system this week to Insiders

Microsoft has delayed its latest Xbox Insider build to deliver something that’s “worth the wait”

Rumour has it that Microsoft plans to deliver its “Positron” system to Xbox Insiders this week. Positron is Microsoft’s codename for its rumoured “Disc-to-Digital” system, which will allow gamers to digitise their disc-based Xbox game collections.

Microsoft’s Brad Rossetti confirmed that Xbox Insider builds on consoles have been temporarily paused, stating that the next update is “worth the wait”. In response, Jez Corden, Windows Central’s Editor, responded, “Positron Commeth”. Clearly, he believes that Microsoft’s disc-to-digital system is coming to Xbox Insiders soon.

What is Disc-to-Digital?

According to The Verge, gamers will be able to get digital copies of compatible Xbox games by inserting compatible disks and installing and playing them. This will be available for Xbox One and Xbox Series games. Sadly, Xbox and Xbox 360 games will not support this feature due to their lack of individual disc identification. Note that some early Xbox One games will be incompatible.

This requires an Xbox account, and digital entitlements are tied to specific game disks. This means that disc-based game entitlements will move to a new Xbox account if the same disc is used with another Xbox profile. This means that gamers will need to keep their discs as proof of ownership and cannot sell them while keeping their game entitlements. Digital versions will be available as game downloads on the Xbox/Microsoft Store. For Xbox Play Anywhere titles, this will also unlock a game’s PC version on the Microsoft Store.

While Microsoft has not confirmed the release of Positron or the feature’s existence, now is a great time to roll it out. This is the perfect time for Microsoft to capitalise on Sony’s decision to stop releasing disc-based PlayStation games.

Like Sony, Microsoft is expected to ditch physical game discs with the release of its next-generation “Project Helix” games console. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is already all-digital, and there are disc-less Xbox Series X consoles. Disc-to-Digital could be Microsoft’s way of mitigating the damage from a future disc-free Xbox announcement. That said, a commitment to discs on Xbox Helix or the release of a disc drive accessory for the console would be better.
