Nintendo is evaluating a Switch 2 1080p OLED upgrade for 2028

Nintendo is considering a major screen upgrade for its Switch 2 handheld

Nintendo is reportedly evaluating a potential OLED upgrade for its Switch 2 console, with plans to release the refreshed system in 2028. According to a report from ZDNet Korea, the new model could enter its product development phase before the end of this year. This could allow for mass production in late 2027 or 2028.

Nintendo is reportedly considering Samsung as an OLED screen provider. Since the original Switch 2 was criticised for its LCD screen, an OLED upgrade would be welcomed by many gamers. OLED screens deliver greater HDR support, deeper blacks, faster response times, and less motion blur. This will allow games to look sharper and more vibrant on a hypothetical Switch2 OLED.

No other hardware changes are reportedly planned for Nintendo’s Switch 2 OLED. So gamers shouldn’t expect this to be a “Switch 2 Pro” system or feature any CPU, GPU, or memory upgrades. That said, the OLED upgrade alone will be enough to improve the Switch 2’s visuals.

The big problem with Nintendo’s 2028 Switch 2 OLED plan is how memory pricing will impact the system. Switching to an OLED screen will likely increase the console’s price. Add on higher memory and storage costs, and this new model could have a much higher price than current Switch 2 models.
