More specifications for AMD’s upcoming 2027 RDNA 5 AT2 graphics chip have leaked, with Kepler_L2 reconfirming that they believe the GPU will launch in 2027.
AMD’s AT2 chip will power next-generation AMD discrete GPUs and will be the chip behind Microsoft’s Project Helix console (leaked specifications here). In this sense, AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture will align AMD’s PC gaming ambitions with Xbox, using the same chip design for both console and PC gaming.
While AMD is aligning with Xbox with its AT2 chip, Radeon will have other RDNA 5-based GPU designs. These GPUs will reportedly launch in 2028, with AMD making both higher-end and lower-end models. This means that AMD will build RDNA 5-based GPUs that will far surpass Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox.
More CUs and faster clock speeds than AMD’s RX 9070 XT
AMD’s RDNA 5-based AT2 GPU chip reportedly has 70 compute units (CUs). That’s six more compute units than AMD’s current flagship, the RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9070 XT. That’s a 9.375% increase in total compute units. KeplerL2 also claims AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs are targeting clock speeds of 3.1-3.4 GHz. This puts AMD’s RDNA 5 clock speed targets 4.3% to 14.4% higher than AMD’s RX 9070 XT. Note that Xbox’s “Project Helix” console will reportedly use 68 of this AT2’s 70 total compute units.
Taken together, AMD’s AT2 chip will be at least 14% to 25.1% faster than its RX 9070 XT, based on its higher CU count and clock speeds. Note that these calculated performance numbers do not account for performance gains through architectural enhancements. Since AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture is expected to feature significant ray tracing and AI enhancements, much larger performance gains should be possible.
AMD’s AT2 chip is AMD’s replacement for its RX 9070 XT GPU, and it is expected to deliver performance levels higher than Nvidia’s RTX 5080. The question now is what AMD will name its AT2 flagship. The RX 10070 XT? RX X70 XT?
Expect a large architectural leap over RDNA 4
RDNA 5 will be a pivotal architecture for AMD in the gaming space. AMD has worked more closely than ever with console makers to create an architecture that will deliver significant upgrades for gamers and developers alike. We can expect major upgrades to both AI and ray tracing performance, along with significant investment in software solutions that can get the most out of this hardware. We can also expect other gaming-focused architectural enhancements that improve traditional rasterised game performance.
Xbox has confirmed that Project Helix delivers 10x the ray tracing performance of the Xbox Series X. Add-on features like neural rendering and next-generation games should look much better than today’s games. Well, assuming that developers invest in these features.
