Xbox demos Xbox 360 on a web browser – Emulation incoming?
Xbox teases classic Xbox interfaces using Xbox Labs tech
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and CTO Scott Van Vliet have teased the return of classic Xbox dashboard interfaces within a PC browser. They showcased the Xbox 360’s “Blades”, “New Xbox Experience”, and “Metro” interfaces as an “Xbox Labs” experiment. Now, Xbox wants to know if Xbox fans like what they are working on.
Notably, a recently leaked Xbox roadmap included plans for Xbox 360 emulation on PC. If true, this Xbox 360 dashboard experiment could be part of Microsoft’s Xbox 360-to-PC emulation efforts. This could dramatically boost Xbox’s profile on PC, since many Xbox exclusives have never been released there.
With Xbox 360 emulation, Microsoft can embrace its gaming heritage and provide a better service to gamers. By making legacy games easier to access, Xbox could curb piracy by offering a stronger user experience. They could even offer gamers a better-than-Xbox 360 experience with features like FPS Boost and Resolution Boost on powerful enough hardware.

Microsoft’s current Xbox Blades experiment appears to run in a web browser, which could imply that Microsoft’s planned Xbox 360 Emulator will be browser-based. Whether that will be the case for the final emulator remains to be seen.
While Sony abandons disc-based games, Microsoft appears to be embracing Xbox’s heritage with features like Disc-To-Digital, Xbox PC emulation, and more. Will these features help Microsoft find success with Xbox? Will Microsoft gain ground against Sony with its next-generation console? That remains to be seen.
