Intel Delays Lynnfield platform
If you’ve been waiting patiently for the release of the Core i5 processors and the p55 motherboards it may be time to twiddle your thumbs a little longer. The delay comes just days after the Itanium chip was set back for improvements to be made to its architecture. Two delays in such a short period is never a good sign, especially from Intel who usually stick religiously to their release plans.
It may well be down to the fact that products aren’t flying off the shelves as quick as before the economic downturn, and Intel are seeking to clear excess stock before flooding the market with new mainstream products. The launch was expected in July but is now being pushed back to September.
Three Core i5 CPUs with frequencies of 2.93GHz, 2.8GHz and 2.66GHz will be first to storm the market, priced at US$562, US$284 and US$196 per one thousands units. Each will feature a TDP of 95W and the P55 chipset itself will cost US$40.
Intel look to be sitting comfortably at the moment, ready to launch the Core i5 processors when and as they see fit.
