Cooler Master’s NC100 brings high-end graphics to Intel’s new Ghost Canyon NUC – CES 2020

Cooler Master’s NC100 lets you add big graphics cards to Intel’s new Ghost Canyon NUC

When we visited Cooler Master’s showroom at CES, the company was keen to show us its new NC100 enclosure, a small form factor case that’s designed to
accommodate Intel’s newly announced Ghost Canyon NUC 9 system.

Why does Intel’s new NUC 9 need a case? It’s because Intel has made its latest NUCs more modular than ever before, promising support for desktop-grade graphics cards and other PCI Express-based accessories.

Cooler Master’s NC100 case is designed to support larger graphics cards than the NUC 9’s reference chassis, a feature which gives gamers a greater selection of discrete graphics card options. The system also supports SFX-sized power supplies, which will allow users of this case to upgrade their PSU if necessary.

Cooler Master plans to allow system vendors like CyberPowerPC, NewEgg and other major retailers in Q2 of 2020, offering users up to 32GB of RAM, up to three M.2 NVMe storage devices and discrete graphics card options from both AMD and Nvidia. The case will also be available as a standalone product for $199.00.

Within the system, we see an MSI Aero RTX series graphics card, showcasing this case’s ability to support longer graphics cards than Intel’s stock Ghost Canyon chassis. This feature gives system integrators and home system builders more options when building or upgrading their systems, allowing them to fit larger, more powerful graphics cards.

Intel’s reference NUC 9 case design can fit, at most, a compact Nvidia RTX 2070 series graphics card, with higher-end GPUs coming with PCBs and heatsinks that are too long to be supported. Custom case designs from Cooler Master and other OEMs will work around this issue.

As you can see, Intel’s NUC 9 fits into the dual-slot PCIe form factor. Beside the NUC is a dual-slot graphics card, through the NC100 has enough internal space to accommodate some 2.5-slot graphics cards. That said, 2-slot graphics cards are recommended for airflow reasons, as 2.5-slot cards will sit very close to the NC100’s side panel.

Keen-eyed readers will spot that Cooler Master’s NC100 case also has an extra PCIe slot beside Intel’s NC100 motherboard. This slot location doesn’t appear to have a specific purpose, though it could be used to add more I/O options or to add switches or dials for PCIe mounted fan/RGB controllers.

Intel’s NUC 9 is designed to offer users higher levels fo customizability than any of their previous NUC designs, and Cooler Master is prepared to deliver that customizability with a case design that’s ready for high-end graphics cards.
