AMD reveals their Ryzen and Threadripper 2nd Generation CPUs
In April 2018, AMD will be launching products based on their ZEN architecture, which will be based on Globalfoundries’ new 12nm manufacturing process and offer both higher overall clock speeds as well as an improved precision boost technology. AMD’s latest boost tech (Prescission Boost 2) will allow AMD to boost core clock speeds more gradually with more steps as each CPU threads are loaded.Â
ZEN is only a small step over the company’s existing Zen architecture, though note that the design work for Zen 2 is already finished. Zen 2 is said to improve on ZEN’s design in “multiple dimensions” while also coming on GlobalFoundries’ next-generation 7nm production node, promising considerable increases in both performance per watt and overall system performance.Â

In April AMD will be releasing 2nd Generation Ryzen CPUs, with the company also revealing plans to release 2nd Generation Threadripper CPU models in H2 of this year. This release schedule shows that AMD plans to replace their entire Ryzen product stack within the year, delivering improvements to both single-threaded and multi-threaded performance.Â
AMD’s 2000G series of APUs already promised easier memory overclocking to 3200MHz, with 3600MHz already being showcased while overclocking at CES, making it likely that Ryzen 2nd Generation will also include these improvements to memory speed scaling.Â
With their Ryzen 2nd Generation products AMD has showcased a commitment to their AM4 platform, offering support for new CPUs on existing motherboards provided they are using supported BIOS’. These BIOS updates are already being released across a wide range of products, making it likely that all Ryzen motherboards will support Ryzen 2nd Generation before April.Â
Existing AM4 users should not be concerned about compatibility with Ryzen 2nd Generation CPUs, though at this time it is unclear whether or not AMD’s upcoming 400-series chipsets will offer any performance benefits over their 300-series counterparts.Â

AMD’s X470 chipset will release in April alongside Ryzen 2nd Generation processors, with AMD promising “Lower Power” operation and optimisations for AMD’s next generation of CPUs. At this time it is unknown if Ryzen 2nd Generation will offer enhanced performance on these platforms, or feature something like improved overclocking performance or enhanced memory overclocking.Â
One of the biggest concerns we had with Ryzen was its clock speeds and its patchy support for high-speed DDR4 memory. This has improved with BIOS updates, but it is clear that AMD plans to address both of these issues with their second generation of Ryzen processors.Â
We are looking forward to seeing what AMD has in store for us with their second generation of Ryzen products. Â
