AMD Ryzen 9000 CPUs will run cool thanks to new thermal lid design
AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series CPUs will run cooler than their predecessors, and not just because of their lower TDPs
AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series of CPUs are launching on July 31st, and they promise to be a lot more powerful, and power-efficient than their predecessors. Beyond that, they will also run cooler, thanks to AMD’s new Ryzen 9000 series thermal lid design improvements.
At their Ryzen Tech Day, AMD has confirmed that they have redesigned the integrated heatspreaders of their latest Ryzen CPUs. The Zen desktop team has optimised its design and made changes to their thermal interface materials (TIM) to deliver superior thermal performance. AMD’s engineers have claimed a 15% thermal resistance improvement with their new thermal lid design, and this change results in lower CPU thermals.
AMD have tested their Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 7950X CPUs using Cinebench R23 and an NZXT Kracken X63 CPU liquid cooler. Both CPUs were tested with their default 170W TDP using the same motherboard and configuration settings. Thanks to AMD’s new thermal lid design, the Ryzen 9 9950X ran seven degrees cooler than its predecessor.
Lower TDPs and a new thermal lid for most Ryzen 9000 CPUs
All of AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series CPUs feature AMD’s new thermal lid design. This is great news for AMD’s Zen 5 Ryzen lineup, as it will effectively lower the cooling requirements of every CPU in the range. Additionally, AMD’s lowered TDPs for their Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will further lower AMD’s cooling requirements. These factors come together to make most of AMD’s new Ryzen lineup much easier to cool than their Zen 4 counterparts.
AMD’s latest CPUs will be a lot easier to cool than their last-generation counterparts. That’s great news for PC builders and OEM customers alike. With their new thermal lid changes, AMD Ryzen 9000 PCs will run cooler and quieter than their last-gen counterparts. AMD has claimed efficiency leadership with Zen 5. Intel should take notes.
