AMD “Strix Halo” CPUs revealed – Ryzen AI MAX is coming!

Rumours of AMD’s upcoming “Strix Halo” CPU have been circulating for a while. It is a powerful Ryzen CPU with strong integrated graphics and an integrated NPU. Now, it looks like this new processor will be released in the form of AMD’s Ryzen AI MAX series, at least according to Golden Pig Upgrade.

With up to 16 Zen 5 cores and 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units, AMD’s Ryzen AI Max series should feature tonnes of CPU and GPU performance. Furthermore, the system’s GPU can reportedly be allocated up to 96GB of memory, making it ideal for AI workstation workloads. These CPUs are also reportedly getting AMD ROCm support.

AMD uses a single chip to deliver strong CPU performance alongside discrete-level GPU performance. AMD’s Ryzen AI Max series is ideal for gaming laptops and workstations. After all, it is easy for laptop makers to cool a single chip instead of two discrete products. In a sense, these new “Strix Halo” AMD chips are an answer to Apple’s M-series of Apple Silicon processors.

Three configurations for AMD’s Ryzen MAX 300 lineup have been revealed. Below are their specifications.

Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 (16 Core CPU + 40 CU GPU)

Ryzen AI MAX 390 (12 Core CPU + 40 CU GPU)

Ryzen AI MAX 385 (8 Core CPU + 32 CU GPU)

In my eyes, the Ryzen MAX 385 looks like an ideal product for gamers. Yes, the higher-end models have more GPU CUs, but they also have more CPU cores to power. If AMD prices these CPUs well, the budget laptop PC gaming market will be transformed. Integrated graphics with discrete-level performance!
