AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X Appears at Retail – It’s cheaper than you think

Almost a year has passed since then, and AMD is showing no signs of backing down, deciding to rock the industry at Computex 2018 with the announcement of Threadriper 2nd Generation hardware, which delivers PC users up to two times more cores and threads as their original Threadripper offerings. 

The flagship of AMD’s upcoming Ryzen Threadripper 2nd Generation offerings, the 2990X, has been listed at Cyberport, an online retailer, with a price tag of €1509, making it considerably cheaper than Intel’s 18-core i9-7980XE, which currently costs around €2000. 

While this pricing seems low for a 32-core, remember that AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700X costs £285 in the UK and that Threadripper 2nd Generation 2990X hardware uses four of the same CPU dies as AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700X. Also, note that AMD’s 16-core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X now costs £650 in the UK. 

With this in mind, a price tag of around €1500 is very reasonable for AMD’s 2990X, as it should easily surpass Intel’s i9 7980XE (32 cores VS 18 cores) and costs a lot more than four AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processors. This €1500 price tag is over 4x the cost of a Ryzen 7 2700X, and will likely ship without a stock cooling solution, giving AMD enough margin to make this price tag seem possible, while simultaneously shattering the competitiveness of Intel’s X299 processors in massively multi-threaded workloads.
