AMD slides leak showcasing Ryzen Pro APUs, upgraded Ryzen CPUs and Vega 20
We already know that AMD plans on moving to Globalfoundries’ new 12nm FinFET process in 2018, delivering a small decrease in overall package size thanks to some transistor density improvements and some potential to increase overall system performance.Â
 Â
Â
On the GPU side, it looks like AMD plans to move to PCIe 4.0 with Vega 20, with the company planning to add support for Frameworks on their Vega GPUs over the next few quarters. Does this mean that AMD’s Vega GPUs have some untapped potential on the workstation/professional side of the market?Â
At this time not much is known about Vega 20, though it is likely to be a refresh of Vega with Globalfoundries’ new 12nm manufacturing process, as 7nm will not be ready in Q3/4 2018. Â
Â
Lastly, we have a slide that details the performance of AMD’s Ryzen 5 Pro series of mobile APUs, which showcases some impressive CPU and GPU performance when compared to a Kaby Lake CPU with the same levels of idle power draw. Â
Ryzen mobile will be a huge launch for AMD, delivering a mobile CPU architecture that can finally compete with Intel, who has been dominant in this section of the market for a number of years. AMD is now is a position where they can compete with Intel when it comes to power consumption and performance, making their products a lot more attractive for thin and light notebook designs.Â
While none of these slides can be confirmed as official, the information contained within them is pretty much what is expected from AMD given their recent releases and announcements. Â Â
Hopefully, Ryzen can remain competitive in the wake of Intel’s Coffee Lake series of CPUs and that their planned Ryzen Refresh on 12nm can deliver the performance gains that the company needs to maintain their market momentum until the release of their Zen 2 architecture on 7nm.  Â
