PC builders have always dreamed of fitting increasingly powerful hardware into ever tighter spaces, whether it is fitting a room-sized PC from the 80’s into the palm of your hand or fitting Intel’s new Skylake-X CPU platform into an ITX form factor.

ASRock has today revealed their X299E-ITX/ac motherboard, which supports quad-channel DDR4 SODIMM memory and alleged support for up to Intel’s rumoured i9 7980XE 18-core Skylake-X flagship. That is a lot of power to fit into an ITX chassis.

This new motherboard fits a lot of components onto its ITX frame, using vertical PCB mounts to some onboard controllers, a pair of M.2 slots and a selection of SATA 6 Gb/s ports. We can see that this motherboard draws power from an 8-pin |CPU/EPS connection and a 24-pin motherboard connection, with this motherboard offering only one PCIe 3.0 PCIe 16x slot for GPU connectivity.

Looking at this motherboard closely we can see that there is a 7-phase VRM solution and Intel’s new X299 CPU socket, with dual Intel Ethernet ports on the motherboard’s rear IO as well as an 802.11ac WLAN controller.

At this time no pricing or availability information has been released for any of Intel’s X299 products.
