ASRock updates their X399 Taichi to support future Threadripper CPUs
What’s more surprising is that AMD’s Ryzen 2nd Generation Threadripper series processors will also support existing X399 motherboards. This backwards compatibility allows boards that were intended to be used with 16-core processors to function with CPUs with over two times as many cores and threads than before, something that is sure to test their VRM circuitry to the limit. Â
ASRock has released their 3.0 BIOS for their X399 Taichi motherboard, delivering “AMD SummitPI-SP3r2 1.1.0.0” to the platform to “support AMD upcoming processors”, a nod to AMD’s previously announced 2000-series Threadripper processors.Â
To update their BIOS, ASRock has released both their new 3.0 UEFI and a version 2.3 “Bridge BIOS”, which means that the X399 Taichi requires two separate BIOS updates to become ready for Threadripper 2nd generation products. The need for two BIOS updates also showcases how much ASRock’s UEFI needed to change to support Threadripper 2, suggesting that there are several changes under the hood of ASRock’s X399 motherboards.Â

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 2nd Generation processors are expected to release with 16, 24 and 32 core models under the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X, 2970X and 2990X brand names. At this time it is unknown whether or not a 12-core model is planned.
AMD has stated previously that Threadripper Gen 1 and 2 processors would continue to be on the market concurrently, at least for a while, suggesting that the low core count variants will not be replaced anytime soon.Â
