ASRock’s latest BIOS Disables Non-K Skylake Overclocking
Â
Ever since the start of this new Skylake Non-K overclocking craze there were always fears that Intel would put their foot down and lock down this unintended feature with future BIOS updates, leaving the Non-K overclocking craze as a temporary thing.Â
In AsRock’s latest BIOS updates for their Z170 motherboard they have disabled their SKY OC function, which was what allowed AsRock motherboards to support Intel Non-K CPU BCLK overclocking, removing this feature from their motherboards.Â
Yes Intel cannot force AsRock motherboard users to update to this new BIOS to remove Non-K overclocking support, but it does mean that future Z170 motherboards that AsRock ship will not have this feature.Â
Right now it is unknown why AsRock has removed this functionality, but it seems likely that Intel may be pressuring motherboard manufacturers to remove Non-K overclocking support so that Intel K CPUs remain the only overclocking capable CPUs on Z170. Â
Â
Â
Right now we do not know if other motherboard vendors will be dropping support for Skylake Non-K overclocking with future BIOS iterations, but it seems likely given the popularity of AsRock motherboards for Non-K Skylake overclocking.Â
