Delidding is nothing new, but until recently it has been a process that has been conducted almost exclusively by end users, with only Intel’s most recent series of Kaby Lake and Skylake-X series CPUs making this process widely available from retailers across the globe with pre-binned overclocking values.Â
With the release of Coffee Lake Caseking with the help of Der8auer have taken delidding to a whole new level, not only delidding their CPUs to replace Intel’s included thermal compound but also taking some more extreme measures to ensure optimal thermal performance at high clock speeds.Â
Today, Caseking now offers three custom i7 8700K variants, each of which can come with final overclocks of 5.0GHz, 5.1GHz and 5.2GHz. To start off there is the Advanced Edition delidded version, which uses a thermal compound from Thermal Grizzly to offer lower load temperatures (10-20 degrees colder).Â
Â
Above this lies the Pro Edition, which has also had its stock IHS smoothed out and nickel plated to improve the CPU’s contact with the user’s cooling solution. This is said to improve thermals by a further 5-7 degrees over the Advanced Edition.Â
Â
At the top of Caseking’s range is the i7 8700K Ultra Edition, which replaces Intel’s standard IHS with a version that is made of 99.9% silver, which is designed to be smoother and offers better thermal conductivity than Intel’s reference heatspreader. This version is said to offer thermals that are 8-12 degrees cooler than their Advanced Edition. This makes it between 18-32 degrees cooler than Intel’s stock 8700K under load. Â

When compared to Intel’s standard i7 8700K these CPUs command some hefty price premiums, though it does guarantee a good overclock and superior cooling performance.Â
All of these improved CPUs from Caseking will come with both Der8auer’s and Caseking’s own logos laser etched onto the surface of the CPU’s IHS, though we have heard that Overclockers UK (who are owned by Caseking) will also be creating similar “8-Pack” CPU variants in the near future.Â
