Cloudflare delivers huge performance and efficiency gains with AMD EPYC Genoa-X CPUs
Cloudflare delivers 145% more performance with their 12th Gen servers thanks to AMD and the EPYC Genoa-X CPUs
Cloudflare, the cloud service provider, has upgraded its server infrastructure with the latest EPYC processors from AMD. Specifically, they have upgraded to AMD’s EPYC Genoa-X 9684X processors, which feature 96 Zen 4 cores and V-Cache.
With this new platform upgrade, Cloudflare claims that its new servers are 145% more performant and 63% more power efficient than before. With its new Gen 12 Compute servers, Cloudflare delivers almost 2.5x more performance per server. Additionally, its servers now support more powerful GPUs, which is great news for customers who want to add AI compute to the mix.
V-Cache is king! – Why AMD Genoa-X is the best option for Cloudflare
When choosing the hardware for their new server generation, Cloudflare tested a variety of CPU options. This included AMD’s Genoa (Zen 4), Genoa-X (Zen 4 + V-Cache), and Bergamo (Zen 4c) processors. With AMD’s 96-core EPYC 9654 (Genoa) CPU, Cloudflare achieved a 2x performance boost over their 11th-gen servers and a 33% increase in production efficiency. With the 128-core EPYC 9754 (Bergamo) CPU, Cloudflare achieves slightly higher performance/efficiency gains. However, AMD’s Genoa-X EPYC 9684X CPU delivered 2.45X performance gains and a 1.63x increase in production efficiency. This made AMD’s Genoa-X CPUs by far the best option for Cloudflare’s new servers.
Clearly, AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology greatly impacts the performance of Cloudflare’s workloads. This technology adds extra L3 cache to AMD’s CPUs, allowing more data to be stored there. This data can be accessed faster than data on DRAM, enabling performance improvements and power efficiency gains.

Cloudflare’s hardware choices will come as great news for AMD. Not only will they continue to be the hardware provider for Cloudflare’s newest servers, but their decision also highlights the benefits of 3D V-Cache in servers. Perhaps this data will help AMD increase their CPU market share in the server market, and increase their Genoa-X CPU sales.
