Delidding has been a popular method for reducing CPU temperatures ever since Intel released their Ivy-Bridge series CPUs, when Intel stopped soldering their CPUs to their IHS (integrated heat spreader) and started using a thermal paste as their Thermal interface material (TIM).

Sadly Intel’s TIM is not the optimal solution for cooling their CPUs, offering acceptable temperatures while using standard cooling solutions but sub-par performance when users overclock their CPUs with high voltages and high-end cooling solutions.

Even now deliding your Intel CPUs can yield thermal improvements of up to 30 degrees celsius under load, though over time delidding became a much more dangerous process, to a point where de-lidding now requires specialised equipment.

With Intel’s latest Skylake and Kaby Lake series CPUs the processor’s PCB is too thin for traditional vice methods to work, at least without a huge risk of damaging your CPU. This has made the need for specialised CPU IHS removal tools greater than ever, as nobody wants to turn their £200 CPU into a paper weight.

Now Kaby Lake has been released, bringing overclockers a whole new generation of Intel CPUs to delid, though this time der8auer has worked to decrease the price of his specialised delidding tool with the release of the Delid-Die-Mate 2.

The benchmark Grandmaster Roman “der8auer” Hartung developed this version 2 Die Mate to provide an accurate and easy solution that allows everyone the ability to remove the heatspreader conveniently and safely without a premature death Of the CPU.

The Delid tool is made of black anodised aluminium with a laser-engraved der8auer logo . With the Delid tool the heat spreader can be safely removed in less than a minute by placing the processor into the Delid Die Mate 2 according to the arrow mark on the CPU.

Once the CPU is seated correctly it you will tighten the HEX screw until the heatspreader is released from the CPU without risk and damage.

This new tool costs a mere €25.99 at Overclockers UK, which is less than half the price of der8auer’s last generation delidding tool.

This tool is compatible with Ivy-Bridge, Haswell, Devil’s Canyon, Broadwell, Skylake and Kaby Lake series desktop CPUs, which covers almost every 115X CPU on the market, with the exception of Sandy-Bridge.

Above is a video where der8auer showcases exactly how to use the Delid-Die-Mate 2, how to clean off and replace Intel’s stock thermal compound and how to replace it with a better performing alternative.
