Does ASUS’ X370 Crosshair VI Hero support AM3 CPU coolers?

Over the past few days, most motherboard manufacturers have been posting pictures of their upcoming Ryzen-ready AM4 series motherboards, though it seems that ASUS has revealed a little more than intended with their Maximus VI Hero motherboards.

Looking at the image below we can see that ASUS’ X370 Crosshair VI Hero motherboard is shown as having additional mounting holes beside their AM4 CPU mounting solution, holes which happen to line up well with AMD’s older AM3 mounting solution.

These mounting holes can be seen in other images for ASUS’ Crosshair VI Hero motherboard, lining up perfectly with AMD’s older AM3 mounting holes, making the Hero the first AM4 motherboard which is backwards compatible with older compatible CPU cooler designs.
