Intel officially reveals their Z370 Coffee Lake series of CPUs

Intel has officially revealed their Coffee Lake lineup of CPUs, confirming its rumoured worldwide October 5th launch date as well as the base and boost frequencies of each unit.

These specifications are very similar to what was previously leaked, confirming that Intel’s new i3 lineup will feature four cores and four threads, the i5 lineup will feature 6 cores and six threads and Intel’s i7 lineup will feature 6 cores and 12 threads.

Intel has also increased the supported memory speed of Coffee Lake to 2666MHz, which is higher than the 2400MHz memory that Z270/Kaby Lake officially supports.  Intel’s new i3 lineup will unfortunately only officially support up to 2400MHz.

What should also be noted is the unit pricing of Intel’s new CPUs, as it is higher than previous generation parts, though note that this is RCP pricing for a 1K unit order, so expect these prices to increase by a few % as it hits retail. Retailers need to make some margin on these products after all.

Below is a die shot of Intel’s new Coffee Lake 6-core CPU die, showcasing a design that is very similar to Kaby Lake. The GPU on this unit is expected to be the same as its Kaby Lake equivalent, but running at a higher clock speed thanks to process node enhancements.

When comparing Intel’s i7 7700K to their i7 8700K the Coffee Lake CPU has a base clock that is 500MHz lower and a boost clock that is 200Mhz higher, which explains why the TDP of this unit is only 4W higher than the i7 7700K. It is expected that this boost clock speed will turn into an all-core CPU boost on certain motherboards, thanks to multi-core enhancement, or other similar technologies.

Intel has confirmed that these new CPUs and motherboards will be releasing on October 5th, though only Z370 motherboards will be available at launch. Lower-end motherboards are expected in early 2018, offering chipsets like B360 and other low-mid-range motherboard options.

Intel is advertising enhanced overclocking capabilities with Coffee Lake, with per-core overclocking, higher max memory clock speed ratios, extended PLL Trim controls and enhanced power delivery on the CPU’s substrate itself.

Please note that overclocking is only possible on K-series SKU, like other previous generation Intel parts.
