Intel’s X299 Kaby Lake-X overclocking reviewers guide has leaked

 
Parts of Intel’s X299 Kaby Lake-X overclocking reviewers guide has leaked, stating that most good i7 7740K chips will overclock to 5.0GHz at 1.215V and that many chips will be able to exceed 5GHz and reach clock speeds of up to 5.2GHz at higher voltages. 
In the guide, it says that the i7 7740K has a “higher overclock ceiling” than the i7 7700K, giving it the potential to offer higher levels of single-threaded performance. It must be noted however that a boost from 5GHz to 5.2GHz is only a 4% improvement, which is likely nowhere near enough performance to consider X299 over Z270.

Given the limited memory options (dual channel instead of 4-channel), core options (only 4-cores) and PCIe options (only 16) when using Kaby Lake-X on X299, it looks like it will be hard to recommend these CPUs over existing Z270 offerings. 

Kaby Lake-X on X299 has always been considered as a strange inclusion by Intel, offering high levels of single core performance at the expense of quad-channel memory support and the ability to use all of X299’s PCIe options, offering a feature set that is almost identical to Z270 on a more expensive motherboard platform.    

One thing that remains to be seen is how well the average Skylake-X X299 CPUs will overclock, given their increase core-count and use of Intel’s older Skylake CPU core design.
