Given the limited memory options (dual channel instead of 4-channel), core options (only 4-cores) and PCIe options (only 16) when using Kaby Lake-X on X299, it looks like it will be hard to recommend these CPUs over existing Z270 offerings.Â
Kaby Lake-X on X299 has always been considered as a strange inclusion by Intel, offering high levels of single core performance at the expense of quad-channel memory support and the ability to use all of X299’s PCIe options, offering a feature set that is almost identical to Z270 on a more expensive motherboard platform. Â Â
One thing that remains to be seen is how well the average Skylake-X X299 CPUs will overclock, given their increase core-count and use of Intel’s older Skylake CPU core design.Â
