Leaked Ice Lake Xeon details – LGA 4187 and 8-channel memory

It looks like Intel is preparing to transition to another socket in the server market, moving from the already large LGA 3647 socket for Skylake-X and Cascade Lake to a new LGA 4189 design. 

This change will be coming with Ice Lake, with the Power Stamp Alliance member Bel Power Solutions revealing that the platform will sport up to a 230W TDP, 8-channel memory support and release in late 2018/2019. 

The move to a new socket and an 8-channel memory configuration moves intel much closer to AMD’s EPYC series processors, which already support an 8-channel memory controller and uses the company’s colossal 4094-pin LGA SP3 socket. With the growing need for both high memory capacities and bandwidth capabilities, it makes sense that Intel would move to support 8-channel configurations, potentially allowing Intel to boost their maximum memory capacity per CPU to 1TB.

Ice Lake is expected to use 10nm transistors from Intel, making this increase in maximum TDP to 230W highly significant, suggesting a considerable increase in overall core count or the addition of new features like on-package FPGAs or OmniPath technology.
