Microsoft is now blocking Windows 7 and 8.1 updates on Ryzen, Bristol Ridge and Kaby Lake based systems, stating that the hardware is “unsupported” and “won’t receive updates”.

This clearly showcases why both Intel and AMD list their new CPUs with a lack of Windows 7 support, with Microsoft refusing to support these new CPU platforms on any OS other than Windows 10. In other words, AMD and Intel can’t officially support Windows 7 and 8.1, regardless of the demand from consumers.

While Windows 7 and 8.1 can still be installed on these new CPU platforms, with the correct drivers, the lack of OS updates will present some major security concerns for users. This will make Windows 7 and 8.1 unsafe OS’ for those who use the latest CPUs.

Unsupported Hardware
Your PC uses a processor that isn’t supported on this version of Windows  and you won’t receive updates.

Because of how this support policy is implemented, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 devices that have a seventh generation or a later generation processor may no longer be able to scan or download updates through Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
