MSI issues statement on Ryzen 7 9800X3D “Damage Incident”
MSI are investigating reports of damaged CPUs on their X870 Tomahawk motherboard
MSI has confirmed that they are investigating reports of a user damaging a Ryzen 7 9800X3D using their MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WIFI motherboard. The company is currently working with AMD to investigate this issue, and they have contacted Gamers Nexus, who are also investigating the issue.
Gamers Nexus purchased the damaged CPU and motherboard from the Reddit user who revealed the issue. This user had their CPU burn out on their motherboard. Their system never posted, and it is currently unknown why this system’s CPU became damaged. Irregularities with the CPU socket suggest that the motherboard used a faulty AM5 CPU socket or that the user incorrectly installed their processor (causing the apparent socket damage).
Recently, we received a user report indicating damage to an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor on an MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard. At MSI, we are fully committed to the quality of our products and have begun investigating this incident.Additionally, we are working closely with AMD and are in contact with GamersNexus, which is independently investigating this incident. We will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
Since the motherboard and Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU have been sent to Gamers Nexus, they cannot be returned to AMD or MSI for their official investigations. Regardless, Gamers Nexus’ investigation should shed light on this matter by publicly releasing their data.
For now, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D users have little to worry about. Installation error and faulty hardware are the two most likely reasons behind this CPU burnout issue. Regardless, this problem highlights why PC builders must be extra careful when installing their CPUs. An improper installation can cause damage to your CPU and motherboard, creating an expensive mess.
