Overclocking enabled? AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D listed with unlocked multiplier

AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPU may be overclockable

AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU has been listed over at geizhals, listing the full specifications of AMD’s newest gaming-optimised CPU. Initially, this CPU was listed as an overclockable CPU. This suggested that AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D will feature an unlocked multiplier.

This listing explains why we have seen leaks that detail Ryzen 7 9800X3D overclocks as high as 5.6GHz. That’s 400 MHz higher than this CPU’s leaked boost clock speed of 5.2 GHz. However, we will note that this CPU’s geizhals listing has now been updated to remove references to overclocking support.

Should AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D feature an unlocked multiplier, users should be able to achieve higher levels of gaming performance than any other AMD CPU in games. An overclock to 5.6 GHz would deliver more than 7.5% more single-threaded CPU performance. While that isn’t much, it is a welcome boost. After all, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is already expected to be AMD’s best gaming CPU.
