7nm Vega silicon is running in AMD’s hardware labs

AMD has confirmed that they have running 7nm Vega silicon in their hardware labs, boosting the power efficiency and clock speeds using the new manufacturing process while also reducing die the product’s size. 

At this time this product is expected to be built using TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing process, which has recently entered mass production, offering a significant leap over the Globalfoundries 14nm FinFET process used on AMD’s RX Vega series GPUs.  

The Radeon Technologies Group has designed 7nm Vega for the Machine Learning market under the Radeon Instinct banner. So far AMD has not discussed a gaming variant of 7nm Vega, though such a release is possible. 

AMD has been extremely quiet in recent months regarding future GPU launches, though this is likely due to the recent reshuffle of the Radeon Technologies Group. Back in January, Mike Rayfield became the head of the Radeon Technologies Group and David Wang as RTG’s president of engineering. During this time RTG has also merged with AMD’s Semi-Custom division.
