AMD Radeon RX 9070 user achieves 25% performance gains through BIOS flashing
Gamers achieve huge performance gains by BIOS flashing their Radeon RX 9070 non-XT GPUs
Using BIOS files from AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT, users of the non-XT AMD RX 9070 have been able to upgrade their graphics cards to higher power limits and clock speeds. This enables users of AMD’s lower-end GPUs to achieve higher performance levels than would be possible through traditional overclocking.
On Reddit, a user called noVa-realiZe has flashed their PowerColor RX 9070 Reaper with a BIOS from the GPU’s XT version. In 3DMARK Steel Nomad, this change alone yielded an 11% performance boost. When combined with an overclock, performance gains of 25% are achieved in 3DMARK Steel Nomad.
While using AMD RX 9070 XT BIOS’ on non-XT GPUs isn’t new, it is rare for these changes to be well documented by users. This user noted the performance gains were lower in games. With their XT BIOS and tuning (overclocking), Cyberpunk 2077 moved from 70 FPS (at stock) to 78 FPS. Overall, the GPU was reported to be “8-12%” faster in games.
While these performance gains are impressive, they are not enough to close the gap between AMD’s RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. Furthermore, it is unknown how these mods will impact the longevity of AMD’s RX 9070 GPUs. Higher power limits and thermals will likely reduce the lifespan of these GPUs. These mods can also cause instability for some GPUs. After all, AMD’s RX 9070 GPUs are RX 9070 GPUs for a reason. They may not be stable at higher speeds. Regardless, these performance gains are impressive.
