AMD releases a statement regarding the RX 560 controversy
This decrease in active compute units lowers the 1024 stream processor count (64 stream processors per compute unit) down to 896, which is a 12.5% downgrade in stream processor count. This is a massive change given the fact that these weaker RX 560 series GPUs are not advertised any differently than full 1,024 core variants, leaving consumers confused and often with a weaker product than advertised.Â
AMD has responded to the recent reports of this issue by releasing the following statement, confirming that RX 560 graphics cards with 14 active compute units are on the market and that the company plans to work with board partners and partnered retailers to clarify which version of the RX 560 they have in stock.Â

  It’s correct that 14 Compute Unit (896 stream processors) and 16 Compute Unit (1024 stream processor) versions of the Radeon RX 560 are available. We introduced the 14CU version this summer to provide AIBs and the market with more RX 500 series options. It’s come to our attention that on certain AIB and etail websites there’s no clear delineation between the two variants. We’re taking immediate steps to remedy this: we’re working with all AIB and channel partners to make sure the product descriptions and names clarify the CU count, so that gamers and consumers know exactly what they’re buying. We apologize for the confusion this may have caused.

AMD’s statement has confirmed that 14 CU RX 560 GPUs have been on the market since the summer, leaving a lot of time for confused consumers to get a weaker card than advertised. It says a lot here that the press was completely unaware of this launch, with AMD effectively re-releasing the RX 460 with RX 560 branding.Â
These new RX 560 896 SP GPUs have the same CU count as AMD’s RX 460, though many will come with higher clocks, making this “new” GPU an effective rebrand of AMD’s RX 460. As we said before, these weaker RX 560 graphics cards have 12.5% fewer CUDA cores than their standard 16 compute unit counterparts.Â
