AMD’s budget gaming king? – AMD aims to create a GPU with RTX 4080 performance for £500 with RDNA 4
AMD hopes to deliver gamers extreme value for money with their RDNA 4 graphics cards
Rumour has it that AMD is aiming to change the dynamics of the PC GPU market with RDNA 4. Instead of focusing on building the highest-end GPU possible, it looks like AMD plans to deliver RX 7900 XTX/RTX 4080 performance levels at an incredibly low price.
According to Moore’s Law is Dead, AMD plans to release an RTX 4080 competitor for a price between $400-600. If AMD settles for $500, they will be delivering roughly RX 7900 XTX performance levels for half the price. That’s great news for the GPU market.
If these rumours are true, it looks like AMD will not be competing within the high-end GPU market with their next-generation products. While this is bad news for those who wants to see a true RX 7900 XTX successor, AMD’s RDNA 4 plans are good for the overall GPU market.
For years now, the mid-range and low-end GPU market has remained somewhat stagnant. With a $500 RTX 4080-like graphics card, we can expect to see major changes to the $200-$500 GPU market. It looks like AMD are planning to deliver the budget GPU market overhaul that we have been waiting for. Let’s just hope that they don’t skimp on the VRAM!
What architectural changes will come with RDNA 4?
Right now, we don’t know much about AMD’s RDNA 4 graphics architecture. We expect AMD to deliver many architectural improvements with their next-generation RDNA architecture. That said, it remains to be seen what these changes will be. Will AMD be boosting their AI performance? Does RDNA 4 deliver a major ray tracing performance overhaul? Will AMD be able to make better use of their dual-issue ALUs in games with their next-gen GPU architecture?
AMD’s next-generation graphics cards will likely use GDDR7 memory. While Samsung have working 37 Gbps GDDR7 modules, we expect most next-generation graphics cards to use GDDR7 memory with speeds of around 32 Gbps.
