AMD’s Frank Azor refutes rumours that FSR 4.1 is skipping RDNA 3.5 iGPUs
AMD’s Frank Azor confirms that “no such decision” has been made to skip FSR 4 on RDNA 3.5 GPUs
Conflicting reports have been coming from AMD regarding the company’s plans for FSR 4.1 upscaling on RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics solutions. This comes after last month’s news that AMD planned to bring FSR 4.1 to Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3), and RX 6000 (RDNA 2) graphics cards.
HardwareLuxx has reported on statements from AMD’s David McAfee that implied that AMD’s FSR 4.1 technology would not be coming to Radeon RDNA 3.5 graphics solutions. Once this became widely reported, AMD’s Frank Azor then stated that “no such decision as being reported and implied here has been made”. Since this isn’t a confirmation that FSR 4.1 is coming to Radeon RDNA 3.5 graphics chips, it could be inferred that such support isn’t currently planned. If such support is planned, AMD is digging itself a hole with this ambiguity.
I wasn't there to hear the exact words said however I will share that no such decision as being reported and implied here has been made. We are not ready to speak to any other potential future product plans at this time. We continue to listen to our customers and we hear you.

Not bringing FSR 4.1 to RDNA 3.5 would be a terrible mistake
If AMD fails to bring FSR 4 to RDNA 3.5 products, it will leave many current-generation graphics solutions without support for modern AI upscaling. In contrast, Intel offers XeSS support with its mobile graphics chips. Furthermore, Nvidia has confirmed that its RTX Spark chips will support DLSS. AMD will be the only outlier here.
Note that the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, and AMD’s Strix Halo products both use RDNA 3.5 graphics. If RDNA 3 GPUs can support FSR 4.1, there is no reason why AMD’s newer architecture shouldn’t. Failing to bring FSR 4.1 to these platforms needlessly handicaps several current-generation AMD products. This includes several gaming-oriented devices.
I’ll put things plainly. If AMD doesn’t bring FSR AI upscaling to RDNA 3.5 GPUs, they are crazy. Failing to deliver will undo much of AMD’s remaining goodwill. Modders have already gotten FSR 4’s INT8 version working on these GPUs. If official support is coming to RDNA 3 and RDNA 2, the least AMD could do is support RDNA 3.5. After all, RDNA 3.5 is newer than RDNA 3.
AMD’s mixed messaging here is not doing anyone any favours. The lack of FSR 4 support undermines AMD’s Strix Halo platform compared to Nvidia’s RTX Spark. It also undermines AMD’s current gaming handhelds compared to Intel-based counterparts. AMD, give gamers clear messaging. As it stands, everyone is assuming the worst because of your ambiguous messaging. In other words, you are needlessly tarnishing your own reputation here. Give gamers a clear message. Is FSR 4.1 coming to RDNA 3.5 GPUs? If not, why not? If it isn’t, you better give gamers a good reason for it.
