AMD’s Radeon Vega Frontier Edition’s “game mode” has no effect on performance
AMD’s “Gaming Mode” has no impact on their Vega FE’s gaming performance
Let’s be clear, AMD’s Vega Frontier Edition was not released with gamers in mind. Even so, performance numbers for this new GPU were desperately sought after by the community to at least give us a first glimpse of what Vega was capable of.
Several review outlets have been able to get their hands on AMD’s Vega Frontier Edition, with Gamers Nexus taking the opportunity to access the impact of the GPU’s “Gaming Mode”, discovering that the card performed identically in every game or professional workload that they tested.
To say the least “Pro Mode” and “Gaming Mode” look identical with current driver revisions, apart from a few different options in AMD’s Radeon Settings, leaving Gamers Nexus to conclude that either the Pro/Gaming driver switching feature is either pointless or unfinished. At best AMD has not delivered the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition with a capable gaming driver, giving users limited performance at launch, but at worst this driver switching feature is completely meaningless.
In all of the testing done by Gamers Nexus, “Pro Mode” and “Gaming Mode” delivered performance that was within 1% of each other, well within margin or error. This will no doubt leave some AMD fans excited that a new “Gaming Driver” is coming to enhance Vega’s performance, but it is unknown exactly how much of a performance impact this new driver will have.
