CableMod issues full recall for their 12VHPWR angled adapters – Stop using these adapters immediately

Today, the popular 12VHPWR angled adapters from CableMod have been officially recalled with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This follows on from company’s “voluntary safety recall” last year.

This recall is both CableMod’s 1.0 and 1.1 versions of their 12VHPWR angled adapters. Over time, the male end of CableMod’s 12VHPWR connectors can become loose, overheat and melt into a user’s graphics card. This can then present fire and burning hazards to users.

The CPSC has stated that CableMod have received 272 reports of adapters becoming loose, overheating, and melting into graphics cards.

Below is what CableMod has to say about the recall on their website, and what they are doing to make things right with customers.

We are voluntarily recalling all of our angled adapters to keep our customers and their hardware safe. We have found that the male connectors on the adapters could become loose during cable management and system use, overheat, and melt into the GPU, posing fire and burn risks. We encourage all of our customers to participate. This recall applies only to our angled adapters and does not affect our angled cables.

We are recalling all models of our angled adapters:

  • CableMod 12VHPWR 90-degree adapter Version 1.0
  • CableMod 12VHPWR 180-degree adapter Version 1.0
  • CableMod 12VHPWR 90-degree adapter Version 1.1
  • CableMod 12VHPWR 180-degree adapter Version 1.1

What We’re Doing for Our Customers:

We are offering customers the choice of either a full refund or a $60 / 60 Euro store credit to be used for any non-customized product that we sell, with free standard shipping. You will receive a full refund or store credit for each angled adapter that you purchased.

If you participated in our Early Adopter Program, we will also be offering customers the choice of either a full refund or store credit for the shipping amount. You will not receive a refund or store credit for the V1.1 angled adapter that you received for free.

Only one type of remedy can be selected for this recall: either all refund or all store credit.

You must have a PayPal account if you elect to receive a refund.

CableMod Safety Recall – Affected 12VHPWR products

CableMod’s recall only affects for products. These products are the 90 degree and 180 degree versions of their 1.0 and 1.1 12VHPWR adapters. This recall does not apply to CableMod’s angled cables.

CableMod’s sold around 25,300 angled 12VHPWR adapters in the US. With 272 reports of issues, the failure rate of the company’s 12VHPWR adapters is low. However, when these failures result in damage to the most expensive GPUs on the market, it is easy to see why this recall needs to happen. First, there is the consumer safety issue, and second there is the sheer expense of repairing or replacing damaged RTX 40 series graphics cards.

If you own one of CableMod’s 12VHPWR angled adapters, you should stop using it immediately. Information on how to claim a refund or store credit from CableMod is available here. Anyone with a GPU damaged by a defective 12VHPWR adapter should contact CableMod support.
