Framework delivers upgradable graphics with the Framework Laptop 16

Framework Laptop 16 users can now upgrade to an Nvidia RTX 5070 – Upgradable laptop graphics have arrived!

For the most part, Laptops aren’t very upgradable. Typically, users can only upgrade their storage and RAM, and even then, that’s not guaranteed. Framework, with its new second-generation Laptop 16, has delivered on its promise to create a laptop with upgradable graphics.

The original Framework Laptop 16 launched with an AMD Radeon RX 7700S GPU option. This GPU was mounted on a slide-on module, with the promise that users could upgrade to a newer, more powerful graphics card at a later date. Now, that time has come, and Nvidia is on board.

Framework is now selling its new Framework Laptop 16 with an RTX 5070 8GB GPU option. Better still, owners of the original Framework Laptop 16 can purchase an RTX 5070 GPU upgrade for $699. This upgrade reportedly delivers a 30-40% performance uplift. This GPU will have a 100W power budget, just like Framework’s Radeon RX 7700S GPU option. While this isn’t the most powerful laptop GPU available, it is a strong option for a thin and light laptop.

Framework plans to release more GPU upgrade options in the future, maintaining an upgrade path for its devices. This assumes that the manufacturer does not encounter issues with graphics card manufacturers, as they need to sign off on Framework’s designs.

Framework’s new Laptop 16 features an AMD Ryzen AI 300 Strix Point processor, supports up to 96GB of RAM, and supports WIFI 7. The device now supports 240W USB-C charging, allowing this system to be operated at full load while charging is battery. The device also features a newer, more rigid chassis and an upgraded microphone and webcam.
