Gamers Turn Down 8GB GPUs – 16GB GPUs outsell them by huge margins
Gamers choose to future-proof, declining 8GB GPU options
Data from Mindfactory, a major German PC retailer (via Techpowerup), has confirmed what many PC enthusiasts expected. Today’s 8GB GPUs are not selling well. For GPUs with both 8GB and 16GB models, such as AMD’s RX 9060 XT and Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti, the sales volumes of the 16GB models are significantly higher.
Based on the data below, AMD’s 16GB Radeon RX 9060 XT is outselling its 8GB counterpart by almost 30x. For Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti, its 16GB card is outselling its 8GB counterpart by over 15 times. Simply put, gamers are saying no to 8GB GPUs.
Mindfactory GPU Sales Data (From July 2nd 2025) |
8GB GPU Model | 16GB GPU Model | Ratio (16GB:8GB) |
Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 Ti | 110 Units | 1675 Units | 15.2:1 |
AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT | 30 Units | 885 Units | 29.5:1 |
Why are gamers saying no to 8GB GPUs? The simple answer is that 8GB GPUs can be a limiting factor when it comes to game performance. Many modern PC games can use more than 8GB of memory, resulting in performance issues for users of 8GB graphics cards. Buying a 16GB GPU can enable higher performance levels in many of today’s newest games. This means that 8GB GPU options are a poor choice for today’s gamers. Gamers aren’t future-proofing their systems by buying 16GB GPUs; they are ensuring that they have a good experience when playing today’s games.
Honestly, it’s not surprising that AMD and Nvidia’s 8GB GPUs aren’t selling well. 8GB GPUs have been available in the lower end of the GPU market since the launch of AMD’s Radeon RX 480 in 2016. While 8GB was considered excessive in 2016, the past decade has seen a significant expansion in memory requirements. Modern games demand more VRAM, and gamers want graphics cards that have enough memory to keep up.
