Graphics memory prices have reportedly risen 30% this month
The world is in a middle of a DRAM shortage, which is due to increasing demand for this technology and the slow rate at which new fabs can be created to manufacture such precise and complex hardware.
Now DigiTimes has reported that both Samsung and SK Hynix graphics DRAM has received price increases of around 30% this month, thanks to both producers dedicating more of their production capacity to memory that is intended for server or mobile use.
If this is correct, it is also expected that VRAM pricing will continue to increase in September, which can then have an impact on the pricing of graphics cards and gaming notebooks/systems. Consumers have already seen how this DRAM shortage affects the pricing of DDR4 DRAM.
Samsung is currently the largest supplier of graphics memory, with the company having 55% market share and SK Hynix having 35% market share. The progress on building new fabs is slow, but ultimately an increase in supply is required to drive pricing down to normal levels.
