It’s official; AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution Technology is coming soon
With FidelityFX Super Resolution, AMD has created a game upscaling technology that can benefit all gamers, not just those on the latest Radeon powered PCs, delivering a feature that can transform the industry, not just on a privileged few.Â
Large Performance Increases – Various Quality Options
With FidlityFX Super Resolution, AMD has highlighted the performance gains that are available to RX 6800 XT owners across the feature’s Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced and Performance modes at 4K. In Ultra Quality Mode, the Radeon RX 6800 XT’s average framerate increases from 49 FPS to 78 FPS, and the gains only get larger if users utilise lower quality FSR modes.Â
With FSR, AMD promised the same performance gains as DLSS while supporting their technology on all modern Radeon graphics cards and even competing Geforce products. The feature will also be available on consoles, giving developers a clear reason to support AMD’s upscaling technology. Even AMD’s older Polaris, Vega and RDNA graphics cards will support FidelityFX Super Resolution, as with AMD’s Ryzen+Vega APUs.Â
As a GPUOpen technology, FSR will be published as an open-source project that is free for developers to use. AMD has confirmed that FSR will be implemented in over 10 âgame studios and enginesâ in 2021, with more coming in 2022.Â

What? FSR supports Geforce GPUs?Â
Nvidia’s GTX 1060 lacks support for Nvidia’s DLSS technology, as Nvidia’s Deep Learning SuperSampling technology is tied to the company’s RTX feature set. This makes DLSS incompatible with non-Nvidia graphics hardware and incompatible with pre-RTX Geforce products. In contrast, AMD’s FSR technology is available to practically everyone, even GTX 1060 users.Â
Image Quality?Â
At this time, AMD has not discussed the image quality offered by their FidelityFX Super Resolution feature, though AMD has confirmed that the technology uses spatial upscaling technology. This technology will not utilise temporal data, making the technology unlike Nvidia’s DLSS 2.0 technology. In many ways, FidelityFX Super Resolution is similar to DLSS 1.0, at least technologically. We will see how they compare in performance terms later this month.Â
We will test AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution feature when it launches, and let you know how the technology compares to native resolution rendering and how it performs on both Radeon and Geforce graphics cards.Â
