LG showcases the world’s first 8K OLED TV at IFA 2018
Sadly, LG has not revealed any pricing information or a release date for this display, though LG has stated that they expect to sell 5 million 8K TVs by 2022, saying that the 8K TV market is in its infancy.Â
Today, it is difficult to find a lot of 4K content, never mind 8K content, something which will no doubt prevent adoption in the short term. Internet speeds will also be a constraint for the 8K content ecosystem, as streamed 8K content would need to push four times as many pixels as 4K streams, something that most internet connections will be unable to handle.  Â
These are the same problems that plagued 4K in the early years, and LG is confident that their 8K OLED displays will play a “major role in reshaping the TV industry”, just like 4K. Ultra-premium display technology will inevitably trickle down to general consumers, though it may take some time for 8K to become commonplace.Â

LG’s 88-inch 8K TV is said to feature onboard upscaling technology, which is supposed to improve the appearance of 4K content, though at this time it is unknown how accurate LG’s upscaling technology is.Â
This announcement is an opportunity for LG to flex their display making muscles to the world, but right now it is unknown how long it will take for this technology to become available to consumers. The one thing that we can be sure about is that it won’t come cheap.
