Microsoft is bringing AMD FreeSync 2 to Xbox One
FreeSync 2 is AMD’s second generation FreeSync standard, offering support for variable refresh rates and HDR content playback. This feature will allow compatible displays to act in sync with Xbox consoles, eliminating tearing while also delivering a smoother gameplay experience. This eliminated console to display mismatching, reducing micro stuttering.
Microsoft’s Xbox One will be the first console to support AMD’s open FreeSync standard, though only Xbox One S and X consoles will be updated to utilise the feature. Next week, Xbox One insiders will be able to use an alpha version of this feature, FreeSync over HDMI. Â
This move will increase the hardware demand for FreeSync technology, potentially producing the world’s first FreeSync enabled TVs in time, which is great news for AMD, the creator of the open variable refresh rate standard.Â
Today no FreeSync compatible TVs exist, which means that Xbox One S/X users will only be able to make use of this feature on FreeSync compliant PC monitors. Xbox consoles do not use DisplayPort for display connectivity, which will force users to further narrow their search for an applicable FreeSync monitor with support for FreeSync over HDMI. Â
This feature will not make it to mainstream Xbox One users for quite some time, having to trickle through Alpha, Beta, Delta and Omega Insiders builds first. Only then will this feature become public.Â
