Valve and Microsoft have revealed a partnership between the two companies that will bring SteamVR support to Microsoft’s Windows 10 VR headsets, significantly improving the number of VR headsets that support Valve’s own VR standard.

Right now it is unclear how this support will work, though it is possible that all SteamVR compatible games and applications will function automatically when a Windows VR headset is attached. We are currently waiting for Valve to verify whether or not VR applications will need to be modified/updated to support Microsoft’s new headsets using SteamVR.

Valve’s Joe Ludwig made the following statement regarding this partnership, which will increase the range of hardware options that PC gamers can use to play VR titles.

The introduction of Windows Mixed Reality headsets is [a] big step forward for VR,

Working with Microsoft to include SteamVR compatibility with these devices is also a big step in growing VR as an open platform for developers and consumers. With a broad range of hardware options available from leading PC manufacturers, the Steam community will have more choice than ever to experience the amazing potential of VR.

What remains to be seen is how accurate Microsoft’s Inside-out tracking system is and how well this system will work in gaming applications, or how well their controller tracking system will function in games. Early Windows 10 VR headsets cost around $399 for both the VR headset and motion controllers, making it one of the most affordable PC-VR systems on the market.

Windows 10 VR will also lack any external VR tracking cameras and/or sensors, which should make their headsets much easier to setup and use than competing offerings. This comes at the cost of accuracy, but it is unknown how well these new headsets perform in this regard.
