Brazilian modder pulls off impossible RTX 5070 Ti repair with an RX 580 donor card

A Brazilian modder named Paulo Gomes has successfully repaired an RTX 5070 Ti graphics card with a massive hole in its PCB. This graphics card was destined for the scrap heap, as a successful repair was considered impossible. Currently, it is unknown how the hole in this GPU’s PCB appeared. It has been speculated that this GPU was “shot”, though this has not been confirmed. Vital components like power phases and circuitry were destroyed when this hole was created.

Gomes managed to repair this GPU by rerouting power with multiple modifications. This allowed power to be delivered to this graphics card using an external RX 580 GPU, which acted as an external VRM to power the RTX 5070 Ti’s GPU core. This resulted in a functioning graphics card.

While this RTX 5070 Ti graphics card is now technically usable, it has not been thoroughly stress-tested. Even getting this GPU to boot was a challenge, given the difficulties adapting an AMD power management system for an Nvidia GPU. Furthermore, higher loads would likely place high strain on the wires connecting these two GPUs or create power balance issues. Regardless, it is impressive that this Frankenstein GPU functions at all.

It is possible that Gomes could improve his power delivery system and make this GPU functional under higher loads. However, it remains to be seen whether or not this mod will be created.

Previously, Gomes has created several custom GPU mods that include an 8GB GTX 970 and 16GB RTX 3070 GPUs.
