MSI lists RTX 5080 24GB graphics card – 50% memory upgrade

Redditor spots 24GB MSI RTX 5080 on the company’s website

A Reddit user called Due-Bee-9574(Via Unkio’s Hardware) has discovered a reference to a planned RTX 5080 24GB graphics card on the MSI website. This listing was found on the CPU compatibility list of MSI’s MAG X870 TOMAHAWK motherboard.

As of now, Nvidia’s RTX 5080 GPU is only available as a 16GB graphics card. However, since the introduction of GDDR7 memory, GPU manufacturers have been able to use 24Gb (3GB) memory modules. With GDDR6, up to 16Gb (2GB) modules have been available. This allows GDDR7 GPUs to feature more memory using smaller memory bus sizes.

Nvidia already uses 3GB GDDR7 memory modules on its GPUs. Examples include its 24GB RTX 5090 mobile GPU and 96GB RTX Blackwell 6000. Today’s 16GB RTX 5080 GPUs use 2GB GDDR7 memory modules. That means that a 24GB model is possible. All Nvidia needs to do is use 3GB GDDR7 memory modules.

Rumours of a 24GB RTX 5080 GPU have circulated since September 2024. These rumours always claimed that the GPU’s 24GB variant would arrive later. These GPUs would be very useful for video editors and creators. These users would greatly benefit from having access to more GPU memory. That said, given the popularity of game texture mods, there are undoubtedly gamers who would also like a 24GB RTX 5080 GPU variant.

So far, MSI has not commented on this 24GB GPU listing. It could be a typo, but it could also be the accidental listing of a future product.
