Nintendo’s reportedly planning a new Switch with a large OLED display

Rumours of a “Switch Pro” have been circulating for years, but Bloomberg believes that Nintendo’s updated Switch variant may be releasing later this year, complete with an “OLED Display and support for 4K graphics”. 

If Bloomberg is to be believed, Nintendo is planning to launch a new Switch variant with a 7-inch 720p OLED screen this year, offering users a high-end display technology and a larger screen size. This new Switch model will likely be the same size as today’s portable/handheld Switch models, with the larger screen size giving the system a smaller bezel. This change would allow the New Switch to retain the form factor of Nintendo’s original console, allowing it compatible with today’s joy-cons and accessories. 

In terms of 4K visuals, Nintendo’s new Switch is rumoured to feature a new SoC from Nvidia that features support for its DLSS technology. This will allow Nintendo to deliver visuals that are close to native 4K without the same amount of rendering effort, pushing the Switch to higher screen resolutions in docked mode while retaining the system’s mobile-focused power requirements. 

Using an OLED panel in docked mode, Nintendo’s new Switch will offer deeper blacks, higher contrast levels and will likely consume less power and deliver faster response times. With these two changes, Nintendo will be addressing two of the major complaints against their Switch system, the performance/resolution of games in Docked mode and the system’s lack of a higher-end mobile experience.
