Nvidia delays next-gen RTX 60 series GPUs to 2028, report claims

Nvidia’s RTX 60 series may have been pushed back to 2028

According to The Information (paywalled article), Nvidia has delayed its “Kicker” (RTX 50 SUPER) GPU lineup, citing memory shortages. As a knock-on effect, this change delays the next-generation of Nvidia GPUs, the RTX 60 series, until at least 2028.

In December, Nvidia reportedly delayed its “kicker” series of refreshed RTX 50 series GPUs. This series of GPUs was delayed without a new release timeline. Nvidia has reportedly prioritised memory production for “the company’s AI chip business”. To put it another way, Nvidia appears ot have deprioritised its GeForce product line.

Nvidia typically releases a new gaming GPU based on a major new chip redesign every other year, issuing a more incremental redesign with greater memory and processing capabilities in alternate years. The company this year had scheduled the release of an incremental update, code-named Kicker, to last year’s RTX 50 line of GPUs, and it had completed the new design, the two people said.

But in December, Nvidia managers changed plans, telling employees and suppliers the company was delaying Kicker, without offering a new timeline. Nvidia managers said one reason was due to the global memory shortages, which have pushed up prices, and the need to prioritize memory production for the company’s AI chip business, according to the two individuals.

Originally, Nvidia reportedly planned to start mass production of its next-generation GPUs at the “end of 2027”. These GPUs would reportedly be based on Nvidia Rubin chips. This should place the mass production of Nvidia’s next-generation GeForce GPUs sometime in 2028.

The delay will also push back the release of Nvidia’s next-generation gaming GPU. Likely called the RTX 60 series, it was originally scheduled to begin mass production at the end of 2027, according to one of the people.

Assuming this report is accurate, gamers will need to wait a while before we see next-generation RTX graphics cards from Nvidia. This will give the GeForce RTX 50 series a lifespan of at least three years, which is a long time for the GPU market.

It is currently unknown if or when Nvidia plans to release its RTX 50 SUPER series “kicker” GPUs. If the memory shortage does not subside, these enhanced RTX 50 series GPU models may never be released. This would give Nvidia’s RTX 50 series the longest product lifespan in Nvidia’s history. The RTX 50 series is already a year old, and gamers may have to wait for two more years before we see RTX 60 series products.
