Nvidia designs GDDR6 RTX 4070 to counter GDDR6X shortage

Nvidia preps a new GDDR6-powered RTX 4070 to counter GDDR6X memory shortages

Nvidia are reportedly working on a new GDDR6-powered variant of their RTX 4070 graphics card to counter an apparent shortage of GDDR6X memory. According to MEGAsizeGPU on Twitter/X, this new GPU will feature 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory. All other GPU specifications reportedly remain unchanged.

Nvidia’s standard RTX 4070 uses 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory. With Nvidia’s rumoured GDDR6 model having 20 Gbps memory, it will have around 5% less memory bandwidth than a standard RTX 4070. This change will have a small impact on the performance of Nvidia’s new GPU. That said, it is still a downgrade.

Nvidia’s rumoured “new” RTX 4070 model appears to feature the same 5,888 CUDA cores and TDP as its existing counterpart. In most games, this GPU should perform near-identically to its standard counterpart. Currently, it is unknown when this GPU will become available.

It’s unknown whether or not Nvidia has plans to create more high-end GDDR6-powered RTX 40 series GPUs. Beyond that, it is unknown how this new GDDR6 variant will be priced when compared to existing 4070 GPU models. Will Nvidia give it the same MSRP as its GDDR6X counterpart, or will it be slightly cheaper. After all, this new model is slower than its GDDR6X counterpart.
