Nvidia issues critical security fixes for their GPU drivers

If you own an Nvidia GPU, make sure your drivers are updated

Nvidia has warned owners of all their graphics cards, whether GeForce, RTX, Quadro, NVS, or Tesla series, about some major driver security issues. These issues are part of a recently released security bulletin that details eight driver vulnerabilities. All of these vulnerabilities have been listed with “High” severity ratings.

If you own an Nvidia GPU, you should update your GPU drivers immediately. Some of these issues impact both Windows and Linux, which means that even Linux users need to update their drivers. To address these vulnerabilities, Nvidia recommends that users install the latest versions of their GPU drivers for Windows and Linux. For Windows users, Nvidia’s GeForce 566.03 driver (and newer) contains fixes for these issues. This driver was released on October 20th.

According to Nvidia, attackers can can use these driver vulnerabilities to exploit the systems of users and execute malicious code. This could lead to the theft of personal data, system tampering, and other unwanted activities. As such, all Nvidia users should update their drivers urgently.

Users of Nvidia GPUs can find the company’s newest GPU drivers on their Driver Downloads page. As usual, Nvidia has not mentioned these security fixes as part of their driver release notes, limiting the reach of their security bulletin and its contents. A lack of disclosure in this critical location leads to lessened reporting on this news and ensures that more Nvidia users are unaware of these issues. Is Nvidia taking its brand image more seriously than it takes security? Perhaps. In future, these disclosures should also be contained within their driver release notes, not just on their Nvidia support page.
